CBD and THC: Finding your ideal Cannabinoid Ratio

CBD:THC Vape carts from Winberry Farms

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical that all of us cannabis users know and love. It’s the cannabinoid that gives you that euphoric “high” effect. Many of us have also learned about THC’s sibling chemical CBD; toted in the news and drug stores as the latest miracle drug that can cure anything. Though this isn’t exactly true.

CBD + THC = Better

CBD, when paired with THC, has amazing medicinal benefits that differ from smoking any ol’ joint from your local weed dealer. There is a synergistic experience known as The Entourage Effect that occurs when multiple cannabinoids are consumed at the same time. In turn, you need fewer of each cannabinoid in order to reach a desired medicinal effect when you have as many of those cannabinoids as possible.

Depending on which ratio of the cannabinoids present in what you’re smoking, you can receive different effects. For example, CBD has shown evidence of quelling some of the negative side effects from consuming high levels of high THC like anxiety, paranoia, raised blood pressure and other feelings of “being out of control.” In turn, it makes for a calmer high that can be intense but manageable if you’re used to feeling too intoxicated by straight THC.

Cannabinoid Ratios Explained

Products that include both THC and CBD will have the quantity of both of these compounds, in relation to each other, listed as a ratio on their packaging. For example, if you have a product with 120mg of CBD and 40mg of THC, it will have a ratio of 3:1, CBD:THC. These ratios can vary in any direction of being CBD dominant, THC dominant, or equal parts of both.

Most modern cannabis breeding has produced strains of flower that are much higher in THC but much lower in CBD and other therapeutic cannabinoids. This means you’ll often see THC:CBD ratios at 300:1 and higher. Though this high THC can be fun for, and sought after by, the recreational user, it limits the amount of medicinal application for those that want relief but don’t want to be “high”. Luckily there are amazing breeders and cultivators who are creating and reviving high CBD flower strains that are the source of true full-spectrum and cannabinoid rich oils.

Different ratios of CBD:THC from High Gorgeous

You can now find strains like AC/DC that come naturally with a 20:1 CBD:THC ratio which has worked wonders for mood disorders, depression, inflammation, epilepsy and many more. Ratios higher than a 12:1 CBD:THC ratio show little signs of creating an intoxicating effect for consumers. However, this is not a steadfast rule, as we all have differing sensitivities and tolerances to THC.

While high levels of THC may lead to intoxication, recent findings have shown that THC is favored as the most medicinal cannabinoid in cannabis, not CBD. This is not to discredit CBD entirely, as it has worked wonders for adolescents and adults alike who suffer from diseases and syndromes that can be completely reverted with CBD. Simply put though, having combinations of CBD and THC together show the broadest range of treatment options with increased efficacy. Finding your ratio is a matter of trial and error. If you aren’t sure what is right for you try talking with your budtender at Mankind in San Diego for some guidance.

The Importance Of Cannabis Genetics

marijuana genetics
Indoor Cannabis Grow

When growing cannabis, a strain’s genetics are arguably one of the most important factors in deciding whether or not you’ll end up with some Grade-A chronic or some mids that you couldn’t pay anyone to smoke. Equally important when smoking, understanding genetics helps you better decide which strain will produce the affects you are looking for. There still remains pure heirloom strains which have survived for decades for sure. Most strains we know now have been strategically hybridized to create new variety and improve past strains with their most desirable traits. What are the basics of genetics, and why are they important to growing and smoking?

Genetic Manipulation How and Why

For growing, genetics will greatly contribute to determining a plant’s size, color, vigor, resistance to pests and mold, smell, taste, yield, and overall cannabinoid and terpene production. These qualities all vary from strain to strain based on its genotype, or genetic code which provides the framework for a strain’s attributes. This code is then expressed through a strain’s phenotype, or physical manifestation of a strains genotype (paired with contributing environmental factors). Like siblings who share DNA, different phenotypes are similar yet vary in how they are expressed. As a hypothetical example, pheno 1 may produce a shorter growing plant with the citrus smells from the mother plant, while pheno 2 may taste earthier, with heavy sedative affects from the father.

As the number of cultivators has increased, so too has strain hybridization. Strains that are unique and high yielding in cannabinoid content, terpene, and over all quantity production are the holy grail for growers. Hybridization helps accomplish this by creating new strains that potentially have the best traits of both parent strains. Growers embark on what’s known as a “phenotype hunt”. This is a large induction of hundreds to thousands of seeds in a search for a new perfect combination of traits from both parents. These traits include growing habits which can make filling a large room a headache. This is due to sporadic growth patterns or a walk in the park due to a strain’s uniformity. Single strains can be bred back into themselves to create more stable and predictable traits.

Consumption Junction Whats The Function?

From a smoking perspective, knowing the genetics of what you’re consuming helps you predict what you will feel and the potential quality of that flower. Genetic consistencies are displayed through strain names that help signify what type of affects you are going to feel. Jack Herer is a popular euphoric and soaring sativa that is crossed with many other strains. Thus, when you see Jack the Ripper or Candy Jack, you can expect similar effects to its notorious parent strain.

The tricky part is memorizing all of the cannabis strain trigger words. Haze, purple, blue, OG, kush, dream, jack, lemon, cookies, etc. These are all common prefixes and suffixes in strain names. Researching what these words genetic lineages are will help you better decipher what strain to pick up off the flower wall at Mankind.

Knowledge Is Power

Knowing which strain to grow and smoke can be a daunting task if you are new to cannabis. Even veterans of the industry are exposed to newly developed genetics, phenotypes and cannabis experiences every day. Taking the time to speak with a knowledgeable Mankind Dispensary consultant will help provide insight on strains you love and even help you find new favorite cannabis genetics in San Diego. Stop by today to find out which genetics are right for you!

Mankind Kitchen – Brownies & Granola Bars

Homemade Marijuana Edible Treats

Homemade Edibles Done Right

We’ve all heard the horror stories of someone from the 1970s eating “magic brownies” and falling asleep for 3 days. It was a guessing game as to what you’d feel. But these day companies, and California law, have made it easier to dose out edibles. But still, wouldn’t you like to make your own?

The fun thing about making your own edibles is that you can be as creative as you want. Mix whatever flavors you like. Don’t want it to be so strong, dilute your butter or oil with regular butter or oil. The possibilities are endless! Dosing is simple – just divide how many milligrams are in your recipe by the amount you yield, and you should get a close estimate of how strong they will be.

It’s simple to infuse just about anything now a days, from butter, to oil, even honey. There’s the crock pot route, in which you can just throw in as much flower as you’d like (at least an 1/8th) along with some butter and let them get to know each other for about 8 hours. If you’re looking for an easier way, you can purchase butter which is already infused, such as Heavenly Sweet Medibles 1000mg cannabutter. Whatever you’re looking for, from ounces to infuse your own butter, to pre-made butter, Mankind has got you covered. Come in and let us help you become a master edible chef!

Cannabis Infused BBQ Sauce

Cannabis Infused BBQ Sauce

Bring On the Que

Summer time is the right time for some outdoor grilling with friends. That means good food and a healthy dose of some homemade BBQ sauce. Sounds pretty good right? Let’s do it one better.

We scoured the internet to find you this amazing recipe from Wikileaf lifestyle writer Jen Keehn. Behold, the cannabis infused BBQ sauce to make your grill a little hotter, and a whole lot cooler.

Cannabis Infused Sauce

This recipe can be used on anything from burgers to chicken and, for the vegetarians out there, even on your veggie burgers or vegetables! It’s easy to make, tastes great, and will give your food, and friends, a nice happy addition to the day.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3-ounce cannabis, coarsely ground
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 5 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 5 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ tablespoon fresh ground black pepper
  • ½ tablespoon onion powder
  • ½ tablespoon ground mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1-2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Make The Magic!

Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring mixture to just a boil and reduce heat to a low simmer. Let simmer for 1 hour, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and allow to cool. You can use immediately or store in the refrigerator or freezer in an airtight container.

That’s it, all there is to it. Whether you add a little sativa to your sauce for an extra pick me up, or indica to help give that food coma a nice mellow addition is up to you. Do you have a favorite flower? Toss it in! Try something with a citrus taste, like some Humboldt County Indoor Citrus Twist (a nice sativa), to go along with a more Hispanic style fiesta.

Or throw in a little Strawberry Bliss from Wonderbrett (solid hybrid) into the mix if you are having a fruit filled feast. Not sure which strains are the right ones for you? Talk to one of our Budtenders at Mankind for a little guidance and some great suggestions.

Mankind’s 5 Ways to Enhance Your High

woman smoking cannabis
Make your high a little better

Life Is About Adventure

Is your normal way of using cannabis just getting a little stale? Life is often categorized into routines, and our cannabis habits are no different.Just because you’ve gotten used to consuming in one way doesn’t mean you can’t have a new experience. The next time you pick up your favorite flower or vape from your local San Diego dispensary like Mankind think about this list. Here are five ways you can enhance your high and take it to the next level.

1. Ingest Terpenes

Terpenes are chemical components found in cannabis that produce its smell and modulate the effects of THC, CBD and other cannabinoids. They possess aroma-therapeutic effects, and strains or forms of consumption which are high in terpenes create a unique experience. This all depends on which terpenes are in that strain. Terpenes like Myrcene and Linalool create calming and sedating effects and thus are closely affiliated with Indica strains. Limonene and Pinene possess uplifting and focusing qualities and are often associated with sativa strains. Consuming terpenes through raw inhalation or vaporizing them in a diffuser, while consuming cannabis, can help intensify and change the direction of your high.

2. Try Different Consumption Methods

balboa-park-san-diego-dispensary-cannabis-edibles
District Edibles cannabis infused gummy

Constantly smoking out of your favorite pipe or only munching on edibles can give you a similar high every time you imbibe in cannabis. They say “variety is the spice of life” for a reason, and it is no different for cannabis. If you’re used to smoking joints, pipe loads, or bong hits then you should try edibles like Kushy Punch gummies or Kiva chocolate bars which will take longer to kick in but will last much longer and can hit in a more intense fashion than smoking. If you’re used to vaping cartridges or concentrates, try a tincture from Outco brands or Care By Design. Tinctures are liquid drops that go under the tongue which reach full effect in around 30 minutes. Different consumption methods provide different pros and cons, so have fun experimenting with new ingestion options.

3. Smoke Some Hash man!

Cannabis concentrates, often known as hash, hash oil, water hash, dabs, distillate, etc. are extracts which boasts much higher cannabinoid levels than your typical cannabis flower. Concentrates are also higher in terpenes, which we learned earlier have THC-modulating effects. The higher presence of both cannabinoids and terpenes means a longer high and more uniquely intense experience. Smoking or vaporizing concentrates like Raw Garden Hash Oil Sauce (insert link to online ordering raw garden sauce) on their own or adding them to your flower will certainly give you a potent high you won’t forget.

4. Consume Before Exercising

Fit couple taking a break

They days of labeling cannabis consumers as “lazy stoners” are long gone. Many users find that ingesting cannabis before a workout can not only improve their focus on the task at hand but can also enhance the high they experience during and after a workout. Studies have shown that cardio exercise can increase blood-THC levels by 15% when cannabis is in your system. Additionally, consuming THC and CBD after a workout can help quicken the recovery process so that you’ll be back to toking and training in no time.

5. When All Else Fails, Take a Tolerance Break

Our bodies love cannabis. It triggers our endocannabinoid system and helps find the missing pieces our body needs to reach homeostasis. This means our bodies hold on to cannabinoids for a long time, building a tolerance to cannabinoids. This is why you may notice your high is not as intense as when you first opened that eighth or took your first drag of your new cartridge. Stopping cannabis for two days out of the month can help reset your system and make it more receptive when you start consuming again. Even taking a minor break can produce a noticeable intensity when you decide to roll up again.

So the next time you decide to relax and toke up with a joint or hit your vaporizer, consider trying some of these ways to boost your high. Reset things and give yourself a unique cannabis experience. You can always come talk with us at Mankind Dispensary too. We are happy to assist in finding the next new product or consumption method to enhance your high.
