FAQ’s FOR LEGAL CANNABIS

FAQs-2

Mankind Cooperative has received a temporary license from California’s Bureau of Cannabis Control, to legally sell recreational cannabis to adults 21 years and older, which takes effect Jan. 1 2018. We have gathered common questions and answered them to help you understand the new laws and regulations as well as the changes that are in effect.

Q: Can I walk into a California dispensary on Jan. 1 to buy weed?

The short answer is yes, so long as you’re over 21 with a legal form of picture I.D.

Q: Who can purchase cannabis?

A: Age requirement of 21+ with a valid government issued picture I.D can legally purchase cannabis. Those that hold a valid medical marijuana card can be under 21 and still enter and purchase at a legal dispensary.

Q: If I am already a medical marijuana patient is my doctor’s recommendation still valid?

A: Yes, there is no change for medical marijuana card holders. However, if you are a medical patient you can get a MMIC card to be exempt from sales tax.

The MMIC identifies the cardholder as a person protected under the provisions of Prop 215 and SB 420. It is used to help law enforcement identify the cardholder as being able to legally possess certain amounts of medicine. Medical patients who have a state medical marijuana ID card will be exempt from the state sales tax immediatelyIf you spend more than $100 per month on medicine, it should pay you to get a state ID card. Under Prop 64, the card fees are capped at $100, and $50 for Medi-Cal patients.

Q: How do I get a MMIC card?
A: To apply for an MMIC card visit San Diego County’s Website Here

Q: Where can I buy recreational cannabis?

A: There are 7 licensed recreational cannabis retail shops in the city of San Diego, Mankind being one of the first and most centrally located.

Q: What are the new cannabis taxes?

A: Recreational “Adult-Use” Marijuana sales will be charged 15% state excise tax, 7.75% sales tax, and 5% municipal tax. Medical Marijuana patients with a MMIC card will be charged 15% state excise tax, and Medical Marijuana patients with a doctor’s recommendation will be charged 15% state excise tax and 7.75% sales tax.

Q: What are the new restrictions on edibles?

A: Edibles are now limited to 100mg of THC in each 10-serving package. Cannabis products can also no longer be made in the shape of a human being, animal, insect, or fruit.

Q: Where can I consume cannabis?
1. In your private home, or the private outdoor area of your home (i.e. your fenced yard)
2. Within the private areas of the home of any adult who permits it (including private fenced yard)You can technically smoke any marijuana (medical or recreational) exclusively in private homes and spaces in San Diego.
3. There are some exceptions for rental properties , which have the right to ban smoking (of any kind) on rental property. But, if no such ban exists for the property, you should be able to smoke within the unit you occupy.

Using cannabis in public is illegal. Fines can be from $100 to $250.

Q: Can I fly or drive with cannabis?

A: As of November 9, 2016, the fine for driving with an OPEN cannabis “container” is up to $250. After January 1, all cannabis products will be packaged in child resistant bags before exiting the dispensary and should remain concealed while in transportation. Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal as well as transporting cannabis across state lines. (Sorry tourists, you must smoke your stash before heading home.)

Q: Does that mean I can buy marijuana without worrying that my employer will fire me if I consume it?

A: Not necessarily. Employers can fire you if you test positive during a drug test. And landlords do not have to allow you to use marijuana on their properties. Those two provisions were included in Proposition 64, largely to increase its likelihood of passing.

Q: Will police search me if my car smells like marijuana?

A: Thanks to new regulations police can no longer use the smell of marijuana or the presence of cannabis products as a legal reason to detain or search you, your vehicle, or your place.

Q: Can I buy a water pipe from a dispensary?

A: Not anymore – After January 1, Businesses that sell alcohol or tobacco cannot sell marijuana, or vice versa.

Q: How will a consumer know whether the marijuana they buy from January 1st on is free of harmful pesticides?

A: The only way to ensure that the product is safe to consume is to purchase from a legal and licensed dispensary.

Q: Can I use a credit card to buy pot?
Yes, Mankind accepts credit cards along with a few other legal dispensaries.

Chong’s Choice Pre-Rolls

1-4

This week I had the pleasure of testing two pre-rolls from Chong’s Choice and I loved them both! Here are all the details:

What’s in the tube? Chong’s Choice Hybrid: Skywalker Hybrid Chong’s Choice Sativa: Fire OG Kush Each pre-roll contains 1 gram of Southern California indoor grown flower First impressions: When you pop the top of the plastic tube, the pungent aroma immediately fills your nostrils. After sliding the joint out of the packaging, I spot the iconic silhouette of Tommy Chong .

What are the effects? Skywalker Hybrid: This is a good strain for chilling out and watching a good movie on a Saturday afternoon (and not just a stoner movie–a movie with depth). It’s not sleepy but it’s definitely relaxing and mellow, while clear enough to be coherent. I didn’t find this to be a particularly talkative strain, so unless you’re combating anxiety, this wouldn’t be my first choice for socializing. The flavor definitely had earthy qualities.

However, for appreciating art, music, or cinema, or just something to take the edge off after a long day, I’d recommend it. Fire OG Kush: This is my new favorite strain for daytime productivity. I felt alert, focused, productive, and clear. There was a little lightness in my head but it only served to help me feel more awake. The flavor is citrusy with a strong flavor of pine on the finish. It left me feeling zippy and motivated, but not anxious. I could see using this being great for cleaning, working out, or plowing through your to-do list.

Overall: High quality indoor flower with potent effects. I love knowing that all of Chong’s Choice flower is thoughtfully curated by someone who clearly understands cannabis. As the Chong’s Choice site says, “Using his lifelong connections in the industry, he has made it his personal mission to share the very best product available with his fans and fellow herb connoisseurs. If anyone knows weed, it’s Tommy. And now fans of comedy and cannabis alike can experience the strains and products that Tommy himself has hand selected.”

LOWELL SMOKES PREROLLS

lowell-farms-1

What’s in the box?: 10 pre-rolled joints (6 grams total flower weight, no trim and no shake), matches

First look: These pre-roll boxes are delightful! Thoughtfully designed, sturdy, and pragmatic (the box actually has a striking surface for the matches!) On the outside is a label clearly listing the “curated mixture” of flower within (in this case, 65% Gorilla Glue #4 and 35% Headband), as well as the total THC content: 24%. The metallic logo on the flip top and slide out cardboard pre-roll box make reaching for a joint feel like a luxurious experience. On the back is list of the company’s values. These include growing with only organic fertilizer, avoiding synthetic pesticides, paying farmers a proper living wage, and using natural materials from seed to sale.

Effects: I smoked about half of the pre-roll and within five minutes noticed warmth spreading throughout my body. I found the effects to be relaxing with a slightly spacey head but still fully able to think and interact with other humans. I noticed a pleasant mood but not giggly. About 35 minutes after smoking I noticed feeling hungry, so I had a snack. The next day I smoked the other half before a yoga class and found it to be great for staying centered and balanced during my practice. Awake and productive, I would recommend this for daytime use—it gives a euphoric boost when you’re on the go.

Overall: I’m endlessly impressed with Lowell Smokes. The artisanal feel of the packaging gives the feeling of unwrapping a high-end box of chocolates. The flower is delicious and potent and the branding is spot on.

MEET CATHY BLISS

cathy1-1

Meet Cathy Bliss of Mankind Cooperative in Mira Mesa

We are so proud of our own Cathy Bliss who was recently featured in SD Voyager Magazine. Read the awesome full story feature by clicking the link at the bottom of the page. Congratulations Cathy! We love you!

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Bliss.

Cathy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was a competitive Ice-skater and then my partner and I joined Ice Follies and toured for five years in the US Canada, Mexico and even Taiwan. We did TV shows, movies, commercials.

Over the years, I have been the Marketing Director for some great projects including Meadowlark Health Center, Dreamweavers Art Gallery and Lakeview Estates.

As a rep for Reading’s Fun, I built a very successful business servicing San Diego schools and businesses with books at huge discounts and raised over a million dollars for charities.

Due to personal health challenges, I became interested in Holistic Health and 12 years ago became a Certified Biofeedback Specialist.

10 years ago, my son James Schmachtenberger said “We should look at medical marijuana as it can help many people.” And that began this journey. James and my husband Bill and I opened a medical marijuana business and joined ASA and Norml and other groups and have been learning and sharing and fighting for Safe Access for Patients. James was the Executive Producer for a Documentary Medical Cannabis and its Impact on Human Health which can be seen for free http://marijuanamovie.org/.

James is one of the owners of Mankind Cooperative, a legally zoned and licensed Dispensary in San Diego. In February 2017 he asked me to become the Marketing Director for Mankind Cooperative.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Medical Marijuana has faced so many challenges and mis-information. We are thankful to San Diego City Council for passing ordinances and zoning to allow access to this medicine which is helping patients alleviate seizures, symptoms of MS, PTSD, anxiety, and so much more.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mankind Cooperative – what should we know?
Mankind is a Medical Cannabis Dispensary that has been helping patients to learn about so many ways to use this plant such as vaporizing, edibles, tinctures, salves, etc.

Patients appreciate having knowledgeable, friendly staff, a clean safe beautiful environment, convenient location, free parking and we are open all the hours to are allowable which is 7am -9pm every day. We get so many comments on social media about people feeling that they can take their time, explore, ask questions, get knowledgeable answers, enjoy many special Patient Education Events and get in and out in a timely manner.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I love to share brilliant lessons and saying from many of my mentors. Curly Smith was a millionaire Real Estate Developer and he said ‘Find 100%ers and keep them with you. You can train people to do the job, but the loyalty and caring and showing up and being 100%er is rare.’ My sons own that principle and have kept 100%ers with them thru many businesses.

Evarts Loomis MD was the ‘Father of Holistic Health’ and Founder of Meadowlark Health Retreat. He wrote a book with Dr Sig Paulson called ‘Medicine for the Whole Person’ and he valued all parts of the person and was open to all therapies including nutrition and herbs and walking in nature and meditation. I value being open-minded and willing to look at all possibilities for health and happiness.
